Specificity of pseudopodium induction by the action of cations on Amoeba proteus.

چکیده
Some substituted cholines, long-chain aliphatic substituted amines and simple inorganic salts have been tested at different concentrations for their ability to induce pseudopodia from Amoeba proteus. The ability of substituted amines to induce pseudopodia is inversely related to their ability to bind to acid polysaccharides. The reaction of compounds with the surface polysaccharide is probably not in itself the only requirement for pseudopodium induction. A mechanism is proposed in which the properties of the cell membrane are altered by the reaction of compounds with bulky cationic groups with the membrane lipid. The formation of new pseudopodia is not the direct result of a local reduction in the surface charge density or in surface potential.

Pseudopodium induction by the action of quaternary ammonium ions on Amoeba proteus.
Some aliphatic long-chain quaternary ammonium compounds and choline derivatives have been examined for their ability to induce pseudopodia from Amoeba proteus. The reaction involved in pseudopodium induction is believed to be between the quaternary nitrogen cations and polysaccharides on the cell surface. Not all of the carboxyl groups of the polysaccharide are involved in this reaction. The me...
متن کاملExtracellular Calcium Changes the Morphology of Induced Pinocytosis in Amoeba proteus
In Amoeba proteus a typical induced pinocytosis is manifested after external application of different agents: aminoacides, proteins, monovalent cations. This pinocytosis is a kind of fluid-phase endocytosis driven by cortical cytoskeleton and may be compared to macropinocytosis in Dictyostelium discoideum in which large fluid-filled vesicles are formed (Maniak 2002). During induced pinocytosis ...
متن کاملFunctional interdependence of pseudopodia in Amoeba proteus stimulated by light-shade difference.
Polytactic cells of Amoeba proteus were exposed to localized photic stimulation. When a pseudopodium is stimulated to advance, by shading it, other pseudopodia are retracted. Activation of the shaded front is the primary response, and contraction of other fronts the secondary one. When a pseudopodium is inhibited by illuminating its frontal segment, or when it is allowed to enter the bright zon...
متن کاملEffects of arginine vasopressin and its functional analogues on contractile vacuole of Amoeba proteus: possible mechanisms of signal transduction
Study of effects of arginine vasopressin (AVP) and its functional analogues on the contractile vacuole of the amoeba Amoeba proteus has esished that AVP (10 μM) increases frequency of vacuole contractions. This effect is reproduced by antagonist of receptors of the V 2 type desmopressin (10 μM), but is suppressed by antagonist of receptors of the V 1 type. Apart from desmopressin, acceleration ...
متن کاملDoes buckling instability of the pseudopodium limit how well an amoeba can climb?
The maximum force that a crawling cell can exert on a substrate is a quantity of interest in cell biomechanics. One way of quantifying this force is to allow the cell to crawl against a measurable and adjustable restraining force until the cell is no longer able to move in a direction opposite to the applied force. Fukui et al. (2000) reported on an experiment where amoeboid cells were imaged w...
